How insurance works
If I’m in-network with your plan, I bill your insurer directly. You pay only your share, which may be a copay, coinsurance, or the full session fee until you meet your deductible.
Once you send me a copy of your insurance card (front and back) and your date of birth, I’ll verify your benefits. I can usually give you a good idea of what your sessions will cost.
Even so, it’s a good idea to call the number on the back of your insurance card yourself and ask about your outpatient mental health benefits for telehealth: your copay or coinsurance, your deductible, and whether you need prior authorization.
When you call, ask specifically about coverage for these two billing codes:
- 90791: the first session (intake assessment)
- 90837: ongoing therapy sessions (53 minutes or longer)
Out-of-network process
If I’m not in-network with your plan, you may still be able to get some of the cost back through your out-of-network benefits.
Not every plan has out-of-network benefits. If yours doesn’t, you won’t be reimbursed for sessions. If it does, you’ll usually need to meet your out-of-network deductible before reimbursement starts.
Here’s how it works:
- You pay for each session at the time of service.
- At the end of each month, I email you a superbill, a detailed receipt with all the information your insurance company needs to process a claim.
- You send the superbill, which includes the mental health diagnosis insurers require, to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
You’re responsible for the full session fee at the time of service, whether or not your insurance reimburses you.
To estimate what your plan might pay, try this out-of-network reimbursement calculator. It will ask for my National Provider Identifier (NPI): 1164898573.
How to pay
Payment is due at the time of service, and I hold a credit card on file as a form of payment. Your card is charged at the end of each session. I accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and HSA cards.
Choosing to pay privately
Some people prefer not to use insurance at all. Insurance coverage for mental health can be limited, and it requires a mental health diagnosis in your health records, which you may not want or need. Paying privately gives you the freedom to choose your therapist, decide how often you come, and continue for as long as you like without worrying about using up your benefits.
Cancellation policy
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let me know at least 24 hours before your appointment.
A missed appointment or a cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice is charged at the full session rate. Insurance doesn’t cover missed sessions, so this fee is your responsibility.
- Insurance clients: your plan’s full contracted rate for a session, including your copay.
- Private-pay clients: $160.
Extenuating circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis.
